Best-in-class packaging data for informed decision making and seamless reporting

Packaging data is fragmented, unvalidated, and often unavailable.

The Packaging Data Hub will provide credible, granular, and harmonised data through a best-in-class verification process – allowing businesses, governments, and civil society to make the strategic decisions necessary for a circular economy.

We partner with the world’s most influential organisations.
Be part of shaping the future of packaging data

.

Creating a 'data standard' for industry

Packaging data is often siloed, fragmented, or simply unavailable. Trusting what you can find is a risk.

The core of the Packaging Data Hub is its transparent verification process – in development with academics, civil society, and industry experts – for rigorous validation that improves data quality.

This will make your data more credible for strategic decision making and comparable for external reporting.

. .

Insights to drive strategic decisions and simplify reporting

Good data should be a prerequisite, but evidence-backed data and insights for packaging remain inconsistent.

The Packaging Data Hub translates unstructured data into consistent, clear metrics for reporting, regulatory compliance, and strategic planning.

. . .

Informed decision making across formats and markets with harmonised data

Taxonomies and data structures grow more complex as policies, regulations, and compliance mandates roll out.

The Packaging Data Hub standardises datasets, applies rigorous verification, and conducts primary research with leading local organisations to create the most complete single view of packaging data – at a level of granularity unavailable today.

ABOUT

A central place for packaging data and insights

Systemiq and Earth Action are partnering to create the Packaging Data Hub, with support from leading NGOs, academia, and businesses.

Governments, businesses, and civil society have a blind spot when it comes to packaging data – from production and consumption data to end-of-life, waste, and pollution.

Once packaging is disposed of, what happens to it? If consumers put it in a recycling bin, does it get recycled? Does it even get collected? What about in different countries? Or different types of packaging?

Too often, these questions go unanswered, especially in countries where waste management systems are overwhelmed with exported waste and single-use products.

Legislation and regulations are being rolled out across the world to require member countries and responsible businesses to monitor and report on their packaging. Do they have the right information to do so?

Data about recycling waste, collection rates, mismanaged waste, and infrastructure development is fragmented and unvalidated at best – and in many cases simply doesn’t exist.

. . .

The team will aggregate, model, and conduct primary research to develop new data that answers these questions. Then, with best-in-class statistical verification and comprehensive local-expert review, the Hub will provide governments, businesses, and society at large with the information they need to make meaningful decisions.

What is this?

This is the website of the Packaging Data Hub, a project designed to solve the issue of availability and reliability in packaging data by creating one place that aggregates, verifies, and provides the data that companies, governments, and civil society need to make a meaningful impact on plastic waste and pollution.

Our strategic partners are The Ellen MacArthur Foundation, The Consumer Goods Forum, WWF, the Global Plastic Action Partnership (GPAP), and the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP). We are excited to work with the leading organisations in the space who will help ensure the Packaging Data Hub is the de-facto standard when it comes to high-quality packaging data.

Plus, the first founding brands and philanthropic funding partners will be announced soon. Would you like to be involved too? Let us know.

In the coming months and years we will provide up-to-date data about packaging

• In the first six months we will focus on plastic packaging:

o End of life (recycling rates, mismanagement, collection, leakage, etc) for 72 countries

o Covering 20 countries in greater detail and with more metrics than just EOL

o Covering priority packaging formats in the EMF global commitment

• In the first year we will expand into more materials, including fibres:

o We will cover priority states in the US

o Up to 30 priority countries

o Covering corrugated paper, paper board, and cardboard

• In the second year we will cover more still, but we’ll decide what exactly along the way.

Founding members will receive:

• Full and early access to the data. The data we expect to deliver is of higher quality and granularity than currently available through Plasteax or any other solution in the market and will have been further validated. This data will also enable companies to make considerable savings on their current data collection efforts.

• The option to join the steering committee and help shape the initiative.

• The option to be consulted during the development process for critical user feedback and product testing.

Over the years Systemiq and EA have worked on dozens of research and corporate projects focusing on reducing plastic pollution and came to the same conclusion – the Packaging Data Hub.
